For a change today I have prepared something very different from the battle reports that I normally bring to this blog. For this I have chosen the conflict between Iceland and the United Kingdom due to the expansion of the territorial waters of the first during the years 1972-1973 where the British fishing boats suffered harassment from the Icelandic Coast Guard causing the Royal Navy to be forced to protect them.
For this, I use the "There's Something Wrong With Our Bloody Fish Today" rules that you can find here is used as well as the great 1/600 scale ships that can be purchased at Shapeways.
Two British trawlers, the Mildford Discount and the Laforey are fishing 40 miles off the Icelandic coast, in waters near the east coast. They maneuver slowly at 4 knots dragging the nets taking advantage of the calm sea and the sunny day.
The peaceful day is altered after seeing in the distance the appearance of the Tyr, an Icelandic coast guard.
The Laforey skipper, (yellow one) choose to continue fishing but the Mildford Discount decides to start collecting the nets, reducing its speed to 2 knots. His master wants at all costs to prevent the Icelandic ship from breaking its nets.
The ICGV Tyr increases speed gradually from 12 knots to 15.
A trawler needs 10 turns to fully collect its nets. The skipper of the Milford Discount frightenedly contemplates that at the speed with which the coast guard approaches, he will not have enough time.
The Tyr continued to accelerate by navigating 18 knots and maneuvering to pass the British trawler net through the stem end.
Not even 30 seconds have passed and sailing full ahead, 20 knots, the Tyr tries to cut the fishing nets passing over them.
But fortune smiles at Midford and the Icelandic ship passes overhead without causing the rig to cut.
Angered by the ineffectiveness of his rush, the Icelandic captain ordered to turn everything to starboard and attack the British fishing vessel. In the distance the Laforey continues to fish but sending urgent calls for help to the ether.
Unable to maneuver, the skipper of the Milford Discount orders the entire crew to prepare for the collision and equip themselves with the life jackets.
Captain Guðmundur Kjærnested has not calculated the maneuver well and at the last moment realizes that he has rammed at full speed against the fishing boat.
The result of the collision causes slight damage to the coast guard but a terrible creaking announces the tearing of the Milford port tack causing a huge gap through which the cold ocean waters rush. The skipper of the fishing boat immediately orders the abandonment of the ship, which fortunately is carried out quickly and without regretting human losses.
In a few moments the Milford leaves the surface of the sea and begins the dive towards its final trip to the bottom of the North Atlantic.
Although the bow of the Tyr has withstood the strong collision, the onslaught has caused the fishing nets to become entangled in the propellers of the Icelandic ship. Captain Kjærnested immediately orders his men to stop the machine and begin tasks to break free from the tangled rigging.
This circumstance has come at the worst moment because suddenly the imposing figure of the gigantic British tug Lloysdman appears on the horizon, who goes to the distress call launched by the Laforey, navigating everything its 5.500 horsepower machine gives; 16 knots.
The appearance of the huge tugboat starts a hooray! from the gorges of the sailors floating in the water near the remains of the Milford Discount.
Kjærnested yells at his men to hurry up with the rigging cut. Right now without seaway they are at the mercy of the huge British ship.
Captain Norman Storey on the Lloydsman Bridge is perfectly aware that the ship under his feet is three times its displacement compared to the small Icelandic Coast Guard. So he orders two things, reduce machine to 13 knots and fire his water cannons at the Icelanders.
The powerful jet of water falls on the bridge of the Tyr without causing damage.
Kjærnested's men have been unable to free the nets in time and the boat is violently pushed by the bow of the gigantic tugboat, laying it on its starboard side and being pushed abaft and to starboard.
The collision causes serious damage to the Icelandic ship, of sufficient importance to immediately leave the area and head for the port immediately.
The Lloydsman has not been harmed and satisfied with having taught the Icelanders a lesson, its captain tacks to port to stay close to the Laforey, just in case, like a good dog herding his flock.
Note: The scenario is a total victory for the British side since the rules automatically grants victory to the side that loses a ship due to sinking, in addition to the points that the Laforey obtained for continuing to fish. The truth is that captain Kjærnested did not correctly calculate the maneuver at 20 knots ...
